Redefining Education for All: Visio Onderwijs’ Mission of Inclusive Learning

In the Netherlands, Visio Onderwijs operates six schools dedicated to empowering students aged 4–20 with visual, motor, or cognitive disabilities. Their philosophy: “Develop at your own level”, is woven into every classroom. From specialized education for students with visual impairments to secondary special education for those with intellectual and motor challenges, Visio tailors learning to individual needs.

Occupational therapist, Nynke Sietsche Lettinga, who splits her time between Visio and her private practice, embodies this mission. Specializing in visual and developmental challenges, she sees firsthand how traditional tools may not be sufficient when it comes to students with disabilities; until innovative solutions like the Clevy Keyboards and ABC Maestro software step in.

The Challenge: Why Standard Tools Fall Short

For students with motor impairments, visual sensitivities, or cognitive differences, standard keyboards and software pose challenges of their own. Tiny keys, fast-paced typing programs, and abstract interfaces often lead to frustration, disengagement, and missed learning opportunities. As Nynke Sietsche explains, “Many of our students cannot use a standard keyboard because of small letters or motor challenges. The Clevy Keyboard design is perfect because it uses large letters and color-coded vowels and consonants.” Without accessible tools, children struggle to participate in literacy, communication, and digital literacy; skills that everyone needs and deserves for independence and future success.

Clevy Keyboards: Built for Accessibility, Designed for Success

The Clevy’s Keyboards are engineered with thoughtful details taken from real users. The large keycaps feature a font that kids already use to learn in school, helping students recognize and press keys accurately. Color-coded layouts that distinguish each area of the keyboard, vowels in light blue, consonants in dark blue, numbers in red, etc. Spill-proof construction and mechanical keys ensure durability and sensory support for students with tremors or low dexterity.

ABC Maestro: Where Learning Meets Play

ABC Maestro transforms the simple act of “learning how to type on a keyboard” into an engaging, game-like experience. The software’s step-by-step progression begins with simple letter recognition and gradually advances to spelling, word formation, and more complicated prompts. Teachers can customize difficulty levels, feedback speed, and activity types, making the software adaptable as the skills grow. Nynke Sietsche highlights how this bridges a critical gap: “There is a gap between ‘playing on a screen’ and ‘typing with ten fingers.’ Many of our children cannot use standard typing programs, because they start immediately with F and J and require speed. ABC Maestro fills that gap. They learn where the letters are in a slow, visual, accessible way.”

Synergy in Action: How Clevy and ABC Maestro Work Together

True magic happens when hardware and software unite. The color-coded keys on Clevy’s keyboard mirror visual cues in ABC Maestro’s interface, creating a seamless learning loop. Students see a letter on-screen, locate it on the keyboard with confidence, and receive instant feedback. This synergy is especially critical for younger learners. Nynke Sietsche shares, “Yes, many students have a yearly goal of ‘keyboard skills.’ This includes letters, but also keys like Enter, Shift, Ctrl. Some write their weekend stories every Monday and typing, even just a few sentences, is empowering for them.” For students who might otherwise give up on typing, ABC Maestro’s playful approach turns practice into motivation, while Clevy’s tactile feedback design, and color-coded mechanical keys ensures they can participate without frustration.

Real Stories, Real Impact: Educators Share Their Experiences

Beyond Visio Onderwijs, the impact of Clevy and ABC Maestro resonates across classrooms. Nynke Sietsche describes how these tools transform daily learning: “We use six or eight Clevy keyboards at school, and all are always in use. Children start younger now with devices, so learning the keyboard earlier is necessary.”

As developers and designers of the Clevy products, the magic happens when valuable stories and feedback are shared by users and experts such as Nynke Sietsche. That is how we define the next step for our products and adapt our approach. As she reflects, “When technology adapts to the child, not the other way around, real progress happens.” This collaborative approach ensures that assistive technology evolves alongside the needs of students and educators, creating sustainable solutions for lifelong learning.
